Game 4 Aadil Sulamain – Tholian ATC

This was my 1st game of Saturday which I didn’t get to start until about 11:15 because I was up late the night before (See game vs. Dave).  Now Aadil is only 11 years old, but he is Ameer Sulamain’s son and I had played against him at last year’s Total Con.  Furthermore, he had just defeated John Malis’ Klingon so I knew the kid could play.  I’ve had very little experience playing against Tholians and none whatsoever while flying a Fed, but I knew I wanted to protect my #1 shield and preserve my turn mode as much as possible.  I was looking to set up a situation where I would take his range 8 Alpha and then burn him through a rear shield.  This would most likely be a range 8 shot, so my goal was to simply get a couple of power hits the 1st time around to complicate his life later in the game.  The thing with Tholians is that the game will usually flow on their terms, not yours.

Turn 1

My Ea was simple.  Fully overload the photons, hold 1 suicide shuttle, 18 to speed (16/24 on imp 26) and 1 point on my #6.  I was willing to slip right to keep my #6 to him so I could turn in later to chase.  I didn’t want to turn until I saw what he was going to do with his web.

Aadil came out going speed 21 the entire turn.  He slipped in a few times and I headed straight up the map.  When I realized I would get range 8 on him I turned left.  I was waiting for him to cast web and he never did.  I crossed his bow at about range 8ish and he still didn’t  fire anything.  Once I was past him my speed change kicked in.  He then turned to his right to shadow me.  Impulse 28 came and went and he did not announce a speed change, so next impulse (29) he slipped left and I slipped left, bringing us to range 4 on a perfect oblique with my #2 facing his #6.  Aadil fired 2 OL and 1 standard disruptor and 6 of his 7 bearing phasers.  He missed with the overloads and didn’t even crack my shield.  I fired 4 16 point Photons and 6 p1’s, hitting with 2 photons and doing 22 internals.  Next impulse he didn’t move and I did, so I turned into him and fired my lf/l p1’s and doing another 9 internals.  He responded with a web fist and the other p1, hacking half of my #1 off.  The impulse after that he had to go forward so I slipped left and hit him through his down shield with my p3’s for more internals (I had destroyed his phaser 3’s prior to this, so he couldn’t fire them at me).  We finished the turn at range 1.  He had taken close to 40 internals in 3 volleys and I had only shield damage.    He conceded during EA of turn 2.  I was planning on slapping him in a tractor and holding him there while my photons charged and vaporizing him on impulse of turn 3.

Even if Aadil had fired his 7th p1 and Web fist at my #2 shield and connected with one of his overloads, he would still have been in a bad way after taking that kind of damage.  He would have been much better off using his web to give me a range 8 shot at best and playing keep away for a few turns while snipping my forward shields.  He told me that he really didn’t know how to handle a Fed and so he just kind of drifted through the game.  He also told me that he was inexperienced in the ATC overall, so I told him that he should try a simpler ship the next time like the Lyran he was flying when we last met.

I didn’t feel great about winning that way, but a W is a W I guess.  I must say that it’s really cool to see a father and son both enter an SFB tournament.  Keep practicing Aadil!!!
