Game 5 Will Leiserson– Tholian ATC

I have never played Will and had never seen him play before, so I was worried about this one.

Turn 1

I used the exact same EA that I did for my game with Aadil.

Will plotted a high speed through out the turn and slipped out while I slowly headed for the middle of the map, slipping in when I could.  At about range 13 or so, Will pinged my #6 shield with 2 out of the 3 disruptors he fired.  I then turned left to face him and he laid a 4 hex breakdown strength web running straight down the hex row I was in.  If I went to the left of it he would have been able to turn left himself and he would have had most of the map with which to run.  If I went to the right of the web, he would be forced to escape into the corner where I had a chance of eventually catching him next turn.  So I slipped out to the right and achieved a couple of hexes separation between the web and myself so I could make a tighter turn around it.  He then laid 2 hexes of web from one of his web snares a couple of hexes past the end of his 1st web.  I would have to run a slalom course to get to him now.  We finished the turn at about range 10 with me turning left to come around his 4 hex web and him heading towards my SW corner.  I thought at this point that he really knew what he was doing.  I would have to be very careful here.

Turn 2

I knew I was going to get at least range 8 on him regardless of what he did with his web and I was willing to accept that shot because I would have most of the board with which to run the next turn.  I knew that he’d have preference of movement if he wanted it and I also wanted to keep my ability to HET, so I plotted a 17/24/23/17 split.  I held my photons and the suicide shuttle, put 2 points into an HET, and 1 point on my #1 (leftover energy).  I had 1 point of impulse in my batts along with 4 warp just in case I had to emergency decelerate.

Will maintained Speed 28 and attempted to wiggle his way out of the corner, but I was able to position myself in such a way that I would get that range 8 shot.  For some odd reason, will did not cast any more web to help his escape.  By impulse 24 I had him pinned to the map edge at range 4 (my #2 to his #6, just like last game).  He was not going to move next impulse unless he HETed, so I fired all 4 16 point photons along with 3 phaser 1’s.  I hit with 3 photons and did over 2 dozen internals.  He fired a standard disruptor, 7 p1’s and a Web fist.  He did 41 damage total, 2 of which I stopped from batts.  Next impulse I let him have it with my other 3 p1’s and he took another dozen internals.  He hit me back with 2 more standard disruptors.  I lost a photon, 3p1’s, and both p3’s along with a Right warp in this exchange.  He eventually came off the wall so he could get in a shot with his surviving p3’s.  He was now firing on my #1.  Impulse 31 I centerlined him on his #5 and fired my 2 lf/l p1’s after placing him in a 1 point tractor that he didn’t fight (He had used his batts for reinforcement and I had 3 left in mine anyways).  He was down to about 18-19 total power.  He let me win the tractor auction at 1.

Turn 3

All I had to do was hold him and reload, so I started my 3 photons (4 to 2 of them, 2 to the third), put 5 into phasers, put 5 into tractor, refilled the batts, held the SS, put 7 on my #1, and plotted 1 impulse and 1 warp tac.  Impulse 1 he attempted to break my tractor, but he only had 5 to tractor and I still had my batts to keep it.  He surrendered a couple of impulses later when his direct fire didn’t even break my #1 shield.

As it turns out, this was Will’s 1st tournament.  He played the 1st turn very well, but he told me he got rattled by my maneuvering in the 2nd turn and didn’t think to use his web to escape.  If he had, he would have taken an average of 12-15 internals and still would have had some ship left with which to hunt me down.  Kevin Block-Schwenk was kind enough to come over and give Will a few pointers on web use and I’m sure that Will will be much more of a threat the next time I see him.
