Tournament Tactics
Game 7 – John Malis,
Klingon
John and I
had chatted a bit on SFBOL before the tourney and we got along
really well. It turns out that we share similar musical interests
and we had a lot in common. I was 5-1 at this point and knew that
I’d made the single elimination round, so I was just going to have
some fun with this one.
Turn 1
I overloaded
all photons, held a weasel, put 1 into tractor and 18 into
movement using a 16/24 split. I was prepared to weasel his
scatter pack drones if he launched it, or just play for the middle
of the board to set up for an overrun on turn 2.
John went
moderate speed and launched his Scatter pack mid turn. He slipped
out a bit then turned left. I headed straight up the board and
turned left when I hit range 15. He scraped away 9 shield boxes
from my #2 with long range disruptor fire. Towards the end of the
turn I turned back to direction A. John turned right himself and
we finished the turn about 9-10 hexes apart facing each other’s
#2’s. Johns’s 6 speed 20 scatter Pack drones where about 6 hexes
from me.
Turn 2
This
situation just screamed “weasel” to me. I could have went fast
and tried to out maneuver his SP drones, but they would have
eventually caught up to me and doing fancy emergency deceleration
plots is risky against a ship that has the amount of options a
Klingon has. The good thing about weaseling in a fully loaded Fed
is that you have all kinds of extra power available to you. If
the Klingon wants to close and hose, I’ll just take his shot and
wait for him to turn off so I can blast a rear shield. If he
wants to fire at range 8 and turn off, he won’t get internals and
I’ll just slowly trundle after him and peg him next turn.
I held my
photons, started a 2nd weasel, put 4 in tractor, 5
reinforcement on my #5, 2 on my #6, 3 into HET, and 10 to move.
My plot was 9 on 1, 4 on 6, and 12 on 14. This would allow me to
move forward 1 hex then weasel on 6. I would then be able to turn
on 8 as my fire control came up to keep him in front of me. John
went speed 21 the entire turn.
Things went
according to plan the 1st 8 impulses. I turned to
direction B to bring my # 1/6 shields to bear on him as I
weaseled away his SP drones. John continued to close off the
oblique offering my his #2 shield. When my FC came up he launched
2 speed 32 drones at me. Impulse 12 I identified his drones as
type 1’s so I used my LF/L p1’s to shoot them down. We where at
range 4 now and we both held fire. On impulse 13 He turned into
me centerlining me at range 3. 1 impulse later I moved forward
(now at speed 12) and we where centerlined at range 2. At this
point I was expecting some major fireworks from him. I called for
fire and let fly with all 4 photons, 4 p1’s (keeping my 360’s) and
a p3. Incredibly, John held fire. My photon dice returned to
form and I only hit with 2, but I still about 54 total damage. I
was really perplexed when John only used 5 reinforcement, so I hit
2 p3’s, a disruptor, a drone rack and some power with my 19
internals. Next impulse he slipped left putting us off each
other’s #2’s again, but he still held Fire. Impulse 16 I HETed to
Direction D and gave him 1 360 p1 and my other p3 at range 1
through his down shield. John finally returned fire with all his
facing phasers, but only did enough to keep my #5 at 1 box after
my reinforcement. My fire knocked out another Disruptor and 2
p1’s. Impulse 17 he had to move straight into my hex where I
nailed him with my last remaining P1. This shot took out another
p1 and his ADD rack. A few impulses later John had a range 2 shot
on my 1 box #5 with 2 of his P2’s, but he declined to take it and decided to concede
the game. He had taken about 35 internals in 3 volleys and was
down to 2 disruptors, 2 p1’s, a drone rack, and his 4 p2’s. Even
if he had hit me for a few internals through my #5, he would not
be able to hurt me much on my reload turn and turn 4 would see him
turned to scrap. John told me he had not counted on me weaseling
his SP drones and had 12 points of reinforcement on his #2. When
I did the weasel plot it completely threw him off his game. He
would have had to turn off and offer me a range 8 shot on an un
reinforced rear shield with no disruptors available of he chose to
turn back in and overrun me. I played it well, but John’s off
game was what gave me the victory. He normally does not miss-play
his ship like that.
